Aesthetics.

I can't sleep. So I will blog.

How are you, blog? I know, it's been about a week. I've been neglecting you. In the beginning of our relationship it was all about, posts posts posts, almost once a day. But I think we've matured to the point where we really don't have to post more than once a week or so. Hey, that's more than other people with blogs post! Besides, the posts will be better if it's not a daily thing. Let me tell you about my week.

So, what's been going on since the last post? Well, that evening I hung out with people and went to a poetry reading. The poetry was... alright. I probably would have liked it even less if I wasn't enjoying the company. All of her poems were about wells and springs in Scotland. I just don't know how I feel about that. The poetry was well-written and all, but in the end who cares about a poem about water? Maybe it's just my tastes. I like poetry that tells me a meaningful little story. Like "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson.  If I remember correctly all of her poems were free verse, and I have a certain distaste for free verse. I believe there's something to be said for meter and rhyme. If it doesn't have meter or rhyme, if it's not lyrical, why write it in line form? Write it in paragraph form and call it a really short story. Doesn't need to be a poem. Maybe I don't know enough about poetry, but I think Robert Frost does, and he said: "Writing free verse is like playing tennis with the net down."

I'm going to put the break in right about here. So, more after the jump! Woo!

My cousin flew into town Friday to go visit her grandmother in Beaufort. I went Saturday to visit, as it had been about 5 years since I last saw her. I always enjoy the drive to Beaufort... except for Jacksonville. That place scares the crap out of me. I don't know what it is. I really love Beaufort. I want to live there. Some day after college I hope I can find the time and money to splurge and rent a house on Front Street for the summer. Maybe I can retire there. Maybe, just maybe, I'll actually figure out how to make some money and I'll be able to move there long before retirement. Doesn't  hurt to dream, I suppose. Saw a really beautiful boat there, that's another thing to dream about.

The most enjoyable part about the trip was talking to my cousin. She's only a few months younger than me and is the same year in college, but she seemed to be completely in the dark as far as all our family lore goes. I guess her mom doesn't tell her anything. Which is understandable. Telling her all the stories I know, I realized just how fucked up my family is. I know that everybody says they have a crazy family, but, seriously, try to find me a family more fucked up than mine. I could write such a good book with these family stories. The interesting parts would write themselves. It would be like a modern day East of Eden. Just replace Salinas Valley with rural North Carolina, and replace Cathy Aimes with my grandma, and you're good to go.

What else? Hmm. I took my dog to the vet today, her heart murmur is going away. I'm relieved. I got new tires for my Jeep, they're an inch bigger than the tires I had on there previously. I think they look a lot better. Expensive, though, but they have a 50,000 mile warranty, so I suppose it's cool. When I was waiting for my tires I noticed that there was a copy of The Bell Jar amongst the pamphlets for various types of tires. I think Sylvia Plath would find that nice and depressing. Silly lady.

That's all I care to write about for now, dear little blog of mine. Thanks for listening.
